The Adventures Of A Travelling Cat - Books 1-5

The Adventures Of A Travelling Cat - Books 1-5

Excerpt from The Adventures Of A Travelling Cat - Books 1-5

Hello, I’m Bubbles the Travelling Cat, although I do have very many other names. Almost too many names to remember, in fact. My full title is Sir Bubbles Mwokozi wa Maisha Tembo, Saviour of the Elephant, Squiffy, Cuddleypoo. Bigebee Bade Kaanon Ka Rakshak, Saviour of the Biggie-Big-Ears and Protector of the Tiger Cubs. What a mouthful.

I’ve also been called Flobbles (as well as some rude names) but that is another story, and I don’t call myself that.

I have travelled to many places and had lots of adventures. especially when Santa Claus sent me on a mission to travel the world and help animals in danger and distress. Because you see, my wife Lily Lollipop, a very pretty white Persian cat, had gone missing and could not be found anywhere. I had searched all over, everywhere that I could think of. So did the children, our nine lovely kittens, our cat friends Silas and Mingo, Mollie the Owl, and Flower, a very kind dog who lived with us and our humans; they all helped to search for her but without success.

Finally, in desperation, I had gone to see Santa Claus in Lapland and asked for his help in finding her. He agreed to help look for Lily but sent me on my mission whilst his best detectives searched the world looking for her.

Without Santa’s help, I could never have found my wife, but eventually I found her in Fairyland and asked her to come home to be with me and our family and friends. However, much to my surprise, she told me that she was very happy there in Fairyland, was best friends with Gloriana the Fairie Queene, and did not want to leave, not even to be with me and our family.

However, I did eventually manage to persuade her to come home with me after promising that I would never go travelling again as long as we were together.

And so, we left Fairyland, but it did not take me very long before I realised that she was unhappy. That she was very unhappy. We’d been to see our children on several occasions and, although she was pleased to see them, I could see that her mind was somewhere else. We also spent time with our cat friends, Silas and Mingo but it was obvious that she was still unhappy, however hard she tried not to show it. ‘What’s wrong with Lily Lollipop?’ Mingo asked. ‘She doesn’t seem to be herself since she came back.’

‘I don’t know what’s wrong,’ I answered. ‘I’m very worried about her.’ However, I did know what the problem was. Although she did not say it, I could tell that she really wanted to go back to Fairyland to be with her friend Gloriana the Fairie Queene.

I did everything I could to try and make her happy; I kept my promise not to go travelling again, even though my paws were getting itchy to be on the roads again, to be on the move again looking for adventures. However, I did think that it would be really, really great if she came with me. Think of the adventures we could have together, I thought.

So, I asked her. ‘Lily, would you like to come travelling with me? We could have so much fun, and I could show you some of the exciting places I’ve been to and meet some of the friends I made. I’m sure you would love to meet Plink and Plonk, the polar bears cubs in Greenland, or Safi and Saka the cheetah cubs on the African plains. Or we could go to India and find Aashi and Aashna the tiger cubs I rescued, and maybe meet their father, Raj the Tiger King.’

‘No, thank you for asking Bubbles,’ she replied, ‘but I’m not a travelling cat, I’m a home cat.’

Which was all very well except that it seemed that it was not my home that she wanted to be in. I could not stand to see her so unhappy. I could not cheer her up. Our kittens could not cheer her up; our friends Mingo and Silas and Flower the dog could not cheer her up; even Lily, the little girl we live with, could not cheer her up.

‘Squiffy’—she calls me Squiffy and Lily Lollipop, Millie—‘Why is Millie so sad?’ Lily asked.

‘She wants to go back to Fairyland,’ I told her, but I wasn’t sure she understood. I wasn’t sure that I understood myself but I dd think that maybe Lily Lollipop was under a spell. That she had been enchanted by the Fairie Queene. When I was in Fairyland, I felt as though I was under a spell; I had found myself walking towards the queen without being aware that I was doing so.

But what to do? In the end, I simply asked her. ‘Lily, Lily Lollipop, do you want to go back to be with the queen in Fairyland?’

‘Yes, yes, I do. I’m sorry Bubbles but, yes, I do want to go back to Fairyland more than anything else in the world.’

‘More than being with me and our kittens, more than being with our friends?’

‘Yes, yes, I do. I’m sorry Bubbles. I love you and I love our kittens but I was just so, so happy there in Fairyland. Everybody is happy there. And you would be happy there as well, I know you would.’

‘No, I don’t think so. It’s not the life for me. And I don’t think it’s the life for you, it’s just an enchanted dream.’

‘No, but even if it is a dream, it’s still my dream. Please Bubbles, please take me back to Fairyland to be with the queen, Queen Gloriana.’

Sadly, I agreed, but what else could I do? I just wanted her to be happy.

‘And then,’ she said, ‘if you can’t stay with me in Fairyland, please my dear, go travelling again. Carry on the good work that Santa asked you to do. That is my wish for you.’

She said her goodbyes to our children, to Mingo and Silas and Flower, gave Lily a last nuzzle and then, with her head held high, together we walked through the Murky Woods until we came to the fairy door, a tiny round door with writing around the outside of it. This was the entrance into Fairyland.
